Steeplebush ( Spiraea tomentosa ), also known as Hardhack, is a compact, moisture-loving native shrub that produces upright spikes of fuzzy pink flowers in mid to late summer. It naturally grows in wetlands, moist meadows, and along streambanks, but adapts well to sunny garden beds and rain gardens. With its bold flower clusters, tidy habit, and excellent wildlife value, Steeplebush is a great choice for adding structure and color to wet or poorly drained sites. Growing Requirements: Light: Full sun to partial sun Soil: Moist to wet soils; tolerates clay, loam, and acidic conditions Height: 2 to 4 feet tall Spacing: Space 2 to 3 feet apart Bloom Time: Mid to late summer (July–August) Hardiness Zones: USDA zones 4–8 Features: Bright Pink Flower Spikes: Dense, cone-shaped clusters of fuzzy pink blooms stand tall above the foliage, resembling miniature “steeples.” Fuzzy Textured Leaves and Stems: Leaves are oblong with a felted underside, adding a soft, silvery texture to the shrub. Compact Shrub Form: Naturally rounded growth habit makes it easy to maintain with little pruning required. Ecological Benefits: Steeplebush is highly attractive to pollinators, especially native bees and butterflies, during its peak summer bloom. Its dense branching offers shelter for small wildlife and birds, while the shrub helps stabilize soil in moist or erosion-prone areas. Deer typically avoid it, making it a reliable addition to gardens where browsing pressure is a concern. Landscape Uses: Steeplebush is ideal for rain gardens, pond edges, wet meadows, and low-lying areas that retain moisture. It can also be planted in groups for natural hedging or mixed with perennials like great blue lobelia, swamp milkweed, and blue flag iris for a lush and pollinator-friendly planting. Its tidy size and bold flower spikes also make it a great native alternative to ornamental spireas. Steeplebush combines vibrant summer color, native habitat value, and adaptability to wet soils—making it a must-have native shrub for gardeners looking to brighten up moist and sunny spaces.
