Known for its tall, upright spikes of violet-purple blooms and fuzzy, silver-green leaves, this drought-tolerant perennial is a favorite in prairie restorations and pollinator gardens. It’s perfect for tough spots with poor soil and full sun exposure. Growing Requirements: Light: Full sun Soil: Dry, well-drained soils; tolerant of sandy, rocky, or poor soils Height: 2 to 4 feet tall Spacing: Space 12–18 inches apart Bloom Time: Mid to late summer (July–September) Hardiness Zones: USDA zones 3–8 Features: Vibrant Purple Spikes: Tall flower spikes are densely packed with small, tubular violet blooms that open gradually from the bottom up. Silvery Foliage: Oblong, textured leaves are covered with fine hairs, giving the plant a soft, grayish appearance and excellent drought resistance. Long Bloom Period: Blooms for several weeks, often well into late summer when many other flowers begin to fade. Ecological Benefits: Hoary Vervain is a magnet for native pollinators, especially bees, butterflies, and skippers. It is a larval host plant for the Common Buckeye butterfly and other Lepidoptera species. Its tough structure makes it unattractive to deer and rabbits, while its seeds are a valuable food source for birds in fall. Landscape Uses: Ideal for dry prairies, meadows, pollinator gardens, and erosion-prone slopes. It pairs well with other sun-loving natives like butterfly milkweed, black-eyed Susan, rattlesnake master, and little bluestem. Use Hoary Vervain to bring height, color, and pollinator activity to even the driest corners of your landscape. Hoary Vervain is a durable and dependable native flower that adds vertical interest, long-lasting blooms, and essential wildlife support to low-maintenance, full-sun gardens.
