Blooming in late spring to early summer, this moisture-loving plant is found naturally along woodland edges, stream banks, and moist meadows. Its elegant form and unique flowers make it a lovely addition to rain gardens, shade gardens, or naturalized plantings. Growing Requirements: Light: Partial sun to full sun with consistent moisture Soil: Moist, rich soils; thrives in loamy or silty soil and tolerates occasional flooding Height: 3 to 6 feet tall Spacing: Space 18–24 inches apart Bloom Time: Late spring to early summer (May–July) Hardiness Zones: USDA zones 3–7 Features: Lacy Blue-Green Foliage: Attractive compound leaves resemble those of columbine or maidenhair fern and provide visual interest all season long. Airy Flower Clusters: Tall stems produce soft, fluffy panicles of white to pale lavender flowers that sway gracefully in the breeze. Graceful Upright Form: Adds height and movement to the garden without appearing bulky or heavy. Ecological Benefits: Purple Meadow Rue supports native pollinators, especially bees and small flies that are active in spring and early summer. Its stems and leaves offer habitat for beneficial insects, and the plant’s moisture tolerance makes it valuable for stabilizing soils in riparian areas or rain gardens. Landscape Uses: Ideal for rain gardens, moist woodland borders, and naturalized meadows. It pairs beautifully with great blue lobelia, swamp milkweed, golden alexanders, and ferns. Use Purple Meadow Rue to add height, softness, and ecological function to partly shaded areas with moist soil. Purple Meadow Rue brings an ethereal texture, soft bloom, and upright elegance to native gardens—perfect for adding structure and biodiversity to moisture-rich landscapes.
