June Grass ( Koeleria macrantha ) is a petite native bunchgrass that thrives in sunny, dry conditions and brings fine texture and movement to native plantings. This cool-season grass greens up early in spring and produces delicate flowering seedheads by early summer—hence its name. June Grass is ideal for prairie gardens, dry slopes, sandy soil, and low-maintenance landscapes. Growing Requirements: Light: Full sun Soil: Dry, well-drained soils; thrives in sandy or rocky ground Height: 1 to 2 feet tall (including flower stalks) Spacing: Space 12–18 inches apart Bloom Time: Late spring to early summer (May–June) Hardiness Zones: USDA zones 3–8 Features: Fine, Upright Foliage: Forms neat clumps of narrow blue-green leaves, staying compact and tidy throughout the growing season. Airy Seedheads: Slender, pale green flowering stalks rise above the foliage in late spring, eventually drying to a soft tan that adds texture into fall. Drought Tolerant: Extremely well-adapted to dry, sunny locations; requires little to no supplemental water once established. Ecological Benefits: June Grass supports native insects by providing early shelter and habitat. Its seedheads are used by birds and small mammals, and its dense base offers cover for ground-dwelling wildlife. As a cool-season grass, it begins growing early in the year—helping stabilize soils and outcompete invasive weeds in spring. Landscape Uses: Perfect for sunny borders, rock gardens, prairie restorations, and erosion control on dry slopes. It mixes beautifully with other drought-tolerant natives like purple prairie clover, butterfly milkweed, or blazing star. June Grass adds softness and contrast to gardens filled with bold native perennials, and its low height makes it a great foreground or matrix plant. June Grass is a resilient and graceful native grass that brings structure, beauty, and biodiversity to dry, sunny gardens—and it asks for very little in return.
