Wild Petunia is an easygoing native perennial that lives up to the name. From mid spring through fall, this cheerful eastern and central U.S. native covers itself in lavender-purple, trumpet-shaped flowers that open fresh each morning. Each bloom only lasts a day, but the plants pump out new ones nonstop for one of the longest bloom seasons in the native plant world . Reaching 18-24 inches tall and wide, Ruellia humilis forms a tidy mounding clump that fits beautifully into the front of sunny borders, rock gardens, native plantings, and pollinator beds. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds work the flowers steadily through the season , and the plant naturalizes politely without becoming aggressive (despite its name, it's not a real petunia, and not invasive in its native range). A tough, easy-care native that tolerates drought and low-fertility soils with grace, Wild Petunia is happy in full sun to part shade and adaptable to most well-drained soils. Plant it where you want long-season color with minimal fuss , and where pollinators can find it morning after morning.
