Description
Dwarf Burning Bush is a deciduous shrub that is prized for its bright red fall foliage colour. In the summer, the green leaves can provide a nice backdrop for more colourful plants. However, it will steal the show in the fall as the green leaves gradually turn a vibrant scarlet-red. Dwarf Burning Bush grows best in full sun; it can tolerate light shade but may lose its fall colour. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and dislikes boggy, wet soil. Protect the trunk and branches from hungry critters in the winter, as they will strip the bark off to eat. Dwarf Burning Bush produces seeds that are eaten and spread by birds. Unfortunately, these seeds can be spread into forested areas where dwarf burning bush can outcompete native plants and form dense thickets that block light from native seedlings. We recommend alternatives like Chokeberry ( Aronia ), Viburnum ( Viburnum ), Sweetspire ( Itea ), and Bush Honeysuckle ( Diervilla ), all of which offer a similar fall colour without invasive tendencies.
