Description
Alishan is a high-yielding variety that produces snow-white apple-type fruits that have an elongated oval shape and, on average, are 8"-9" long. The gourds have thick flesh and have a crisp texture and flavourful flesh with a distinct, bitter taste. Alishan is noted as being less bitter than traditional green varieties. As a bonus, the young shoots, leaves, and gourds are also edible. Like most gourds, Bitter Melon has separate male and female flowers and may require hand pollination if insect activity is low. Harvest your bitter melon when it is between 8" and 9" long and firm. Remove ripe gourds quickly to keep plants productive. Bitter melon requires warm weather in order to grow. They do best in full sun with well-drained, fertile soil and consistent moisture. Amend heavy soils with organic matter before planting to improve your drainage.
