Description
Nannyberry is a large, flowering, deciduous shrub that is native to Ontario. It produces an abundance of flat clusters of creamy-white flowers that are loved by pollinators. For berries to form, you need another Nannyberry that is genetically different to cross-pollinate. If pollination is successful, bluish-black fruits ripen in late summer, just before the leaves turn shades of purple, red, and yellow in fall. The berries are eaten by birds and other wildlife, but can also be eaten fresh from the tree or made into jams and other preserves. Nannyberry is also a larval host for the Spring Azure butterfly. Nannyberry grows best in full to part sun with moist, well-drained soil. It's able to adapt to different soils, moisture, and pH levels and can also be grown as a small tree, rather than a large shrub.
