Description
Red Osier Dogwood is a shrub native to Ontario that is popular for its vibrant, bright red stems in winter and its reliable, easy-to-grow nature. In late spring/early summer, small clusters of creamy-white flowers appear that mature into white berries. The foliage often turns shades of reddish-purple in the fall before dropping, revealing the bright red stems. In addition to being ornamental, Red Osier Dogwood provides food for wildlife. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Waterfowl, marshbirds, shorebirds, and small mammals eat the berries, and deer will often browse the foliage and stems year-round. It's also the larval host for the Spring Azure butterfly. Dogwoods are low-maintenance shrubs that grow well in wet areas and in average garden conditions; just keep them well-watered until they establish. Red Osier Dogwood can tolerate full shade, but flowering will be reduced.
