Description
Bur Oak is a large deciduous tree native to Ontario. It features dark green leaves that turn yellow to golden brown in fall, large acorns, and a wide, open crown. It is also an excellent tree to support wildlife. The acorns provide food for small mammals, deer, turkey, and other birds, while the branches provide shelter and nesting sites. It's also the larval host plant for hundreds of butterfly and moth species and helps promote local food webs and healthy ecosystems. Bur Oak grows best in full to part sun with average, medium-moisture, well-drained soil. They are adaptable to many different conditions and are drought-tolerant once established. We love bur oaks for their large acorns and ability to grow in alkaline soils without developing chlorosis.
