Description
Tulip Tree is a large, fast-growing, deciduous tree native to Ontario. It features glossy green foliage that turns a brilliant yellow in the fall and pale green to golden yellow tulip-like flowers in early summer. The blooms are often missed as they develop when the leaves are on the tree and often appear high up in the canopy. However, these flowers are valuable for wildlife, providing a source of nectar for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. The seeds that follow are a food source for squirrels and birds, and it's also a larval host for several moth and butterfly species, including the Eastern Swallowtail. Tulip Tree grows best in full sun with moist, fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. They cannot tolerate drought; consistent moisture is important to their health.
