Description
Cucumber Magnolia is a large deciduous flowering tree native to Ontario. It produces slightly fragrant, yellow-green tulip-like flowers in late spring that turn into cucumber-like fruits (hence the common name). These fruits are a food source for ground-feeding birds and small mammals. It has large green leaves that turn a gold-yellow in the fall. It can take 12 or more years before flowering occurs. Cucumber Magnolia grows best in full to part sun with moist, rich, well-drained soil. It will not tolerate extremely wet or dry soil, pollution, or poor drainage.
