Description
Charmant is an early cabbage variety with a great, sweet flavour. The heads are dense and smooth with creamy interiors that are surrounded by medium green leaves. Once mature, they typically weigh between 3-6lbs. This variety will stand for weeks before splitting, so you don't need to stress about harvesting time. Once your cabbage is firm to the touch and the interior feels dense, it is ready for harvest. Avoid heavily fertilizing your cabbage as it nears maturity, since rapid growth can cause the heads to split. Overwatering or heavy rains after dry spells can also cause splitting. Cabbage is a cool-season crop and performs best in spring and fall, before the temperatures begin to rise. High heat can stop the heads from forming. They prefer to grow in full sun with fertile, consistently moist, well-drained soil. Consider adding organic matter to your soil to improve fertility and drainage.
