Description
Purple Top White Globe is an Heirloom variety of Turnip that features smooth, 3"-4" diameter round roots that are white below the soil and purple above. The large green tops can also be used for cooking. Turnip roots can be harvested at any time; small ones are the most tender. For a more mature size, wait until the root is around 2"-3" wide. The greens can be harvested throughout the growing season, but taste best when they are young and tender. If you are growing turnips for the roots, don't harvest too many of the greens, as the plants need them for producing energy. Turnips are a cool-season crop and tend to bolt when temperatures rise. Plant them in full sun and in fertile, light soil. Keep the soil lightly moist, not soggy, as dry soil can cause plants to become woody and/or bitter. Add organic matter to improve soil fertility and improve drainage.
