TILLANDSIA CARE: (TI-LAND-ZEE-AH) Tillandsia, Air Plants, are tropical Epiphytes, meaning that they naturally grow in the trees, under the canopy in tropical and subtropical regions. Filtered, bright light is best. Although some varieties grow very well in direct sun, it can also be too strong and quickly burn the leaves of most varieties. If introduced gradually, certain Tillandsia may be able to tolerate more direct sun, and it may bring out some amazing colors. Air plants can typically take more direct sun in the winter months, from November to March, as it’s not very strong, but during the summer months, indirect light is best to avoid leaf damage and keep your new Air Plants looking and feeling their best. Being that Tillandsia are tropical and absorb the water and nutrients they require through their leaves, out of the air, it is important to keep your Air Plants hydrated. We shower all of our Tillandsias about twice a week, with good quality water. We recommend rain water, if possible, or bottled water, as tap water out of the faucet can be harmful with the chlorine and minerals. When watering, use a spray bottle and thoroughly water your Tillandsia to the point of water run-off. Do this once or twice a week, or more, if needed, in hotter, dryer months. Your Air Plants should be completely dry within 4-6 hours after spraying to avoid rot. Tillandsia can live, and thrive, with just water, and no fertilizer. “Feeding” your Tillandsia, however, can help them grow, bloom and “pup” more vigorously. If you want to fertilize, you want to be careful. Because Air Plants do not have any soil to help disperse the fertilizer, you want to make sure it is very diluted before spraying it on to your plants. We recommend a Tillandsia fertilizer or even an Orchid fertilizer, diluted to 1/4 th the recommended strength.

While there are only about 90 true species, many growers and hybridizers have come up with some incredible cultivars and hybrids. As popular as they are, Alocasia can also be a tad needy when it comes to their care. Those that master it, will have wild success with all types of Alocasia. Heat and humidity are key components to keeping your Alocasia happy and preventing a dormancy stage. Keep the soil moderately moist, and warm, and provide multiple hours of bright, indirect sunlight. Some Alocasia varieties can adapt to full sun without a problem, but starting off slow is always best.

Begonia is one of the largest genera of flowering plants, with over 2,000 species, that are perennial in their natural habitats in moist, subtropical and tropical climates throughout the world. In nature, Begonias can be found in South and Central America, Africa and southern Asia. With thousands of species and even more hybrids and cultivars, all boasting colorful foliage and / or flowers, it is easy to see why they are so beloved, and we absolutely love Begonias here at the Jungle. At any one time we may have 100 varieties growing. While some struggle to care for their Begonias, anyone can succeed with a few tips. An East or West facing window is always best, to provide short amounts of direct light without the harsh afternoon rays. Begonias prefer to stay on the drier side of moist when it comes to their soil. They will mush and rot if they are kept too wet, but if allowed to dry out completely, they will collapse and some leaves may not bounce back. Temperatures above 90 F can also cause some Begonias, mainly rhizomatous and Rex, to struggle and even melt. Cane Begonias, such as Angel wing and Dragon wing tend to be a little more tolerant of higher temperatures and can even be acclimated to full sun.
