Antique Calcite Inverted Dome Chandelier, Steuben

Antique Calcite Inverted Dome Chandelier, Steuben

ID: #1652844

Description

An incredible antique inverted dome chandelier by Steuben, dating from the early 1900s and salvaged out of a home in New York. This chandelier begins with an understated canopy, descending in three chains to support a calcite art glass shade with a gorgeous acid cutback design. A booklet on calcite glass found in the Corning Museum of Glass Rakow Research Library describes calcite glass as “composed of three distinct layers of glass, one upon another, and then all fused into one single piece of glass. The highly glazed pure-white interior surface yields a maximum of reflected light. The middle layer of amber toned glass serves to soften the intensity of the bowl, and to shield the eyes from the harmful rays of the lamp. The outer layer of white glass acts in combination with the other two layers, to produce proper diffusion or softening of the glass. The outside surface is subjected to a secret process which imparts to the glass a rich satin-like, iridescent appearance, beautifully blended and very attractive.” This light fixture is in very good antique condition with some fleabites and chips along the rim which do not detract from its beauty (as pictured.) It has been professionally rewired and comes with all the necessary attachments for modern installation. This fixture measures approximately 17-3/4″ in diameter, 6-1/2″ tall, and 27-1/2″ long overall.
