Overview Build your own solar powered gadget charger in minutes with this simple soldering kit! Centered around 2 rechargeable AA batteries this kit is a great solar powered activity to learn about soldering, solar power, and engineering. Plug in your favorite USB device and when you've depleted your battery power stick this charger in the sun to recharge You'll need some simple soldering skills to build this kit. Overall there are 5 solder points with most of them being through hole to a circuit board. Build time is is between 20-45 minutes and will require a soldering iron, screw driver, and hot glue gun, though it isn't a bad idea to also have a wire cutter/ stripper around. Rechargeable AA batteries are a very safe and inexpensive source energy storage, but they're not really great at recharging devices. Typically a full charge on the included 2 AA batteries will only charge up a modern phone 5-10%, with some phones using MORE power than the charger can output (meaning you won't see any percent change). If you're looking to build yourself a more powerful version our Solar USB 3.0 includes a lithium battery, we just don't recommend this for younger Makers. The project does NOT come with an Altoids tin or enclosure. If you go this route please keep in mind that the tin edges are VERY sharp and can easily cut a finger open. It's also quite conductive so you'll need to properly insulate the tin with electrical tape or hot glue. We recommend using a $1 Store plastic food container instead. A handy DC to USB assembled circuit that we use to make our Solar USB Chargers . You can use it too. Takes DC power from as low as 2V and bumps it up to the 5V USB needs at around 600mA (0.6A) of current. Due to popular request, we've now added soldered 6 inch wires to the USB circuit. This should entirely remove the need for soldering in many projects. This circuit works fine with most simple USB devices, however many modern phones or tablets require a much higher sustained amperage than what this circuit can output. For best results use a lithium or alkaline based battery source.

Overview Please note that this kit has been discontinued. Create your own computer controlled Solar Tracker in under an hour with this specialized solar kit! This kit includes everything you need to complete the project, from the wooden parts and screws to the custom Arduino shield and micro servos. The entire project takes about an hour to build. The only tools you'll need to complete this project are some screw drivers and a computer to upload the final code (included). When finished the project can be power by any USB power source, such as a power bank or computer USB port. Data collection is easy using the 6V 200mA solar panel and the LED volt meter. This allows the tracker to easily be used as part of a science faire project or as a classroom demo. Since the kit is only held together by screws it can easily be disassembled for multiple uses in a classroom setting. To make the build easier we've designed out own custom Arduino Shield and PCB sensor holder. Code is included in our online directions and can be uploaded via the free Arduino IDE software. Curious creators can also modify or upload their own custom code through the same interface. If you don't wish to purchase the full kit you can chose to buy just the electronics or just the wooden pieces and screws. Once Power and Ground are connected you can wire an LED to any of the numbered pins. Pins 1 & 2 slowly fade. Pin 3 blinks at a fast rate, while Pins 4 and 5 alternate blinking. You can wire up LEDs, or multpul LEDs, to each pin. Just keep in mind that a CR2032 battery will only power 2-3 LEDs and if you're powering more you'll need to use a more power battery source.

Overview Spun from stainless steel fibers and nylon this conductive thread is the perfect solution to all your e-textile needs. This is great as it acts like thread, not like a wire! We like this particular thread for several reasons. First, it's thin and easy to sew with. Second, it's strong. Really strong. As in machine washable strong. Lastly, it only has a resistance of between 10-20 ohm per foot which makes it excellent for both large and small projects. Our pre-wound plastic bobbins each come with 16.4 feet (5 meters) of conductive thread. Most projects only need 1 to 3 feet of thread, such as our bracelet project, which uses 3 feet of thread each. This works well for projects that need a concentrated beam of light, such as our Straw Wars Cards or our LED Name Badges. However if you're doing regular paper craft projects you probably want to use our Jumbo Diffused LEDs that have a solid glow to them. Add some flair to your project with our Color Cycling LEDs. Just add power and watch it slowly change all sorts of colors; no extra parts or supplies needed. Power these LEDs from a 3V coin cell battery such as a CR2032. This IR Sensor works great with our Bit Board or Robotics Board and is a simple way to add a sensor to your next robotics project. This IR Sensor uses light to detect changes in color. We use this sensor with our Bit Board Rover in order to tell the difference between black and white in our Line Follow projects. This sensor will accept voltage inputs from 3.3V to 5V and can detect changes between 1mm and 25mm away. Output is digital, not analogue. Simple adjustments can be made using the on board potentiometer. Information is output via 4 male pin headers on the circuit board. A Relay Module that can easily be controlled by a Bit Board, Robotics Board, or MicroBit. A Relay Module allows a microcontroller, such as a MicroBit, to turn on or off a 'dumb' component. Think of it as a programmable DC switch. Typically these are used to turn on or off high amperage draw components, such as a motor or water pump, since such components will destroy a microcontroller if hooked up directly. We use this module in projects such as our Bubble Blower or Automatic Plant Watering System . To use this component, just connect it to your micro controller of choice with a ribbon cable. Then connect your motor (or other component) along with a power source (such as a 2AA battery holder or 9V plug) to the screw terminal side. You're now ready to turn things on and off. This component connects a 2 AA or 2 AAA battery pack to the Crazy Circuits system. To help with building projects, we've added in two requested features! First, a small status LED shows when power is flowing to the system. Second, we've built in Short Circuit protection.
