Kiwi bark's chunky texture makes for an excellent soil amendment! Kiwi bark has a slower decomposition rate and is less likely to rot compared to other wood. Perlite is the most commonly used additive for increasing soil drainage. It is volcanic glass that forms when glass literally pops like popcorn under super-heated temperatures. Philodendron hederaceum is known for its versatility and durability in a variety of different spaces. With the proper care, it can be a fast growing during the spring and summer making it perfect for hanging baskets! The baskets are especially cute due to the heart shaped foliage. Care: We recommend weekly waterings typically as the soil is 1"-2" dry for this size. This will also do best in a bright filtered light. Although this is sold often as a low light plant, our definition of low light is what the plant needs to survive. A source of natural light somewhere in the room will keep this plant sustained and thriving. These are our favorite simple pots. We aren't the biggest fan of those plain old terra-cotta planters but these light peachy clay body makes for a modern look to traditional terra-cotta. An absolutely adorable miniature caudiciform. This species is hardly found in cultivation! Native to parts of South Africa, these are a VERY slow grower. It can take several decades to grow a few centimeters in diameter! Because of this, these may be roughly the same size throughout most of it's life. It has very short branches that can form purple/pink flowers in the spring and summer under the right growing conditions. Care: These will do best when given a bright light like a cacti would. They do not need full direct sun, but a bright dappled sun will do nicely. As with most Caudiciforms, they will need to fully dry out in the soil between waterings. We end up watering ours only once a month! They store a lot of water in their bases! These will not develop a deep root system so be sure to pick a small shallow pot when re-potting. They will like to be in a coarse cacti soil medium that will drain water well. We would recommend avoiding watering during the winter as they will go dormant during the winter. These pruners cut like butter. We personally use these in the shop for any clean up projects! Niwaki tools follow the design of traditional Japanese made tools. Drop-forged from high quality carbon steel (SK grade), these will stay sharp for a long time. They can cut stems and branches up to 1" in diameter. Good for indoor and outdoors! Moss poles are great to add to your climbing plants such as Philodendron or Monsteras. We make these with an inner layer of sphagnum moss, which is superior with moisture retention, then we use an outer layer of sheet moss as a green exterior. It can help to keep your moss pole moist by misting it or sticking your watering can into the moss pole so it trickles down. Since the moss is preserved, there is no upkeep needed for the moss pole itself other than keeping moist. It can be helpful to mist aerial root nodes along your plant as well to help encourage it to naturally attach to your moss pole! We love this cactus for its amazing shade of azure and lightly golden spines. It keeps this gorgeous color as it matures though can be a bit of a slow grower. This species is hella freakin' adorable. It is native to the Andes Mountains getting the nickname "Old Man of the Andes." It is a high elevation cacti and the natural fiber that grow on it is thought to protect it from extreme sun and extreme temperature fluctuation of its native habitat. The hair is actually modified spines and a product of natural adaption and evolution. Care: It would do best in a bright light or even some dappled direct indoor sun. Usually these go by “Pothos” but these actually are not pothos at all. These are in the genus Epipremnum which the genus holds a variety of incredibly beautiful and unusual species. This is one of our favorites with the most beautiful variegation and known for being one of the easiest plants to care for. Care These can handle somewhat lower light conditions but would thrive in brighter indirect light. A good rule of thumb is if you can comfortably read a book where your plant is, that should be enough light. These will need water when first 1-2 inches are dry which should roughly be about 7 days. This Rhaphidophora is native to parts of Asia. It is a shingling grower, meaning the leaves grow directly off of the vine rather than growing with a defined stem. These ones stand out among other shingling Rhaphidophora as they have dark velvety leaves with shimmering veins! These will do best if given a flat surface to climb such as a board. For best growing results, these will also prefer warmer conditions. Care: These will do best if given a bright filtered light, though they can be very tolerant of low light conditions. You will want to avoid any sort of hard direct sun as this could potentially burn foliage. They can go slightly dry between watering, roughly 2"-3" from the top of the soil. This special species is native to several parts of South America. As it matures it will develop more distinct lobes and can resemble more of an oak leaf in shape. The real intrigue with this plant is the stem and petioles are completely covered in hairs, also known as pubescence. New pubescence will be bright red! A true weirdo! This plant has definitely earned it's common name of the "Dead Stick" plant. Hailing from boggy areas of Madagascar, these plants tan up from intense sun which cause them to blend in with the trees they grow on. It is believed they have evolved this trait to avoid being eaten! They are a bit slow growing, but it is worth the wait to let these drape and fill up a hanging basket. Care: These need a very bright light to grow well. Brighter light will cause these to tan up to a deep purple! Lower light conditions will cause foliage to revert to green. This plant is quickly becoming an all-time classic. It's one of the faster growing Alocasia and is quite durable. They can get foliage as large as a torso with beautifully dark velvety and distinct venation. To say their big foliage is quite regal is an understatement! Care Alocasia will need bright filtered flight to really thrive. They will naturally shift their foliage orientation towards the strongest source of light. Sometimes, if an Alocasia leaves look like they are 'bowing' or the foliage is making an 'umbrella' shape this can be an indicator that it is not getting enough light. An epiphite endemic to Madagascar, this species is heavily associated with descriptions by Charles Darwin. It has a symbiotic relationship with the moths in it's native region that have developed significantly long proboscis. This way they are able to collect nectar from the specially shaped elongated floral spurs while simultaneously pollinating the flower. This documentation was part of the foundation of Darwin's theory of co-evolution. This batch is mature blooming size, but not currently in spike.* Care Orchids such as this one will like a bright indirect light (they will not flower in lower light conditions!). A classic houseplant Alocasia amazonica "poly" is making a huge comeback after cultivation had halted. We absolutely love this plant for its distinct foliage and rapid growing pattern. Care With most Alocasia you want to provide plenty of bright light. Begonias have a very special place in our hearts. This cane variety is a hybrid of maculata. When comparing to the "My Special Angel," this one has even more white speckling as well as an almost silvery sheen to the foliage! This has been on Arium's wish list for years! This Alocasia has the thickest and most textured leaves out of all of the Jewel Alocasias. These leaves almost look like they are made of plastic! It is only found growing in rocky areas of the tropical rain forests of Sabah, Borneo. Care: Alocasia will need bright filtered flight to really thrive. They will naturally shift their foliage orientation towards the strongest source of light. Not your grammy's plant! This has been a variety that has always stood out to us. As they mature they vine downward beautifully. This is a slight variation of the carnosa that has a lighter inner variegation. Emerging growth has a vibrant pink hue before changing to it's natural green as it matures. Care We recommend bright filtered light and watering every 12-14 days. The foliage will usually get somewhat soft or limp as an indicator of when they need a drink. Kokedama is a method of bonsai originating in Japan. It compacts the roots of a plant and encases them in moss. An unusual recently created cultivar we are head over heels for! Scindapsus is genus of aroids found in the Asias. These make for great houseplants given their low maintenance requirements. They offer beautiful silvery foliage and are quite a prolific grower. A nice contrast to any space! Care: We recommend weekly waterings when the first 2"-3" of the pot is dry and a nice filtered light.
